My name is Danielle Hinson and I am 33 years old. My occupation used to be a very simple question to answer: elementary school teacher. However, since I "retired" in January of this year, coming up with one phrase that describes what I do has become very difficult. I am a Star Diamond Beachbody Coach. I am a group exercise instructor. I am a master trainer for Shaun T Fitness. I am a personal trainer. When you combine all of those things, I guess the best way to describe my new career is as a full time fitness professional.
My journey into health and fitness started at a very young age. As a dancer from the young age of 3, I was always moving. I would take hours upon hours of dance a week. Luckily, both my parents were very into health and fitness so all that dance was coupled with good, nutritious food. I have fond memories of weekends at the gym as a family....dad making home made granola bars, mom wearing her spandex thong leotard over bike shorts, and me looking at them in amazement thinking, wow, I want to be like them when I grow up. Baked chicken was a staple for dinner in my household. So when the time came for me to go to college, eating wasn't an issue. Sure, I ate McDonald's and drank beer like the typical college kid, but as a collegiate dancer for the University of Central Florida I had to run a mile before and after practice and I had two a day practices four days a week.
For the most part, I ate healthy because its what my body craved and the only way I knew to eat. When I got married and had children I vowed that nothing would change. I stayed active literally up until the moment Adrianna, my oldest daughter (11 now if you can believe it) was born. I gave myself one week even though doctors orders were slightly different. That first week I began some core exercises. Two weeks later I was back to my pre-baby weight with pictures to prove it. From that point forward, even though fitness wasn't my career yet, just like my parents, it became my hobby. I worked out at home, I worked out at a gym, I started taking classes. I subscribed to magazines, bought books and dvds, gave out free advice. It was my passion.
That passion became all consuming. I loved my role as a fifth grade math teacher. I loved being a wife to my husband Jason and a mother to my two children Adrianna and Bianca. But I felt like fitness was my true calling. So, one day my husband and I got in a discussion about me getting a job in the summers to earn extra money for the family. That is when things changed. I decided to become a group fitness instructor. I went to a TurboKick training and got certified to teach my very first format. It was at that certification that I was introduced to Beachbody and the coaching opportunity. April 15, 2010. The date everything changed.
From that day forward I morphed...I taught school, I taught fitness classes, I grew my business. I started my brand, Fit and Funky, and became the go to fitness girl amongst my friends and social media. A year and a half later I was able to "come home" and realize my dream of not only being a stay at home mom but a fitness professional. My husband also was able to come home and together we run Fit and Funky ....reaching as many people as possible. Through my role with beachbody and my role locally in the gyms, I have had the great pleasure of helping so many people achieve physical and financial success. After I retired from teaching my opportunites grew! I was asked to be in the Insanity Infomercial, which is currently on television. Through that experience I formed a bond with the creator of Insanity and he asked me to be in his newest program Insanity the Asylum Volume 2 which is expected to be released in October. From there our relationship grew to where I am now honored to not only work for his company Shaun T Fitness as a master trainer for his group exercise format S.T.R.I.D.E, but to call him family.
I am often asked, "how do you get those abs?" LOL..well as the saying goes, abs are made in the kitchen not the gym. I am not on a diet or any of the other different forms of eating out there. I follow a few simple rules that work for me and my body type. I start my day everyday with Shakeology. Its my staple in my diet. Starts my day out on the right foot. The rest of my day is the basic guidelines of clean eating. I try to eat as many fruits, veggies., whole grains, lean proteins, and seeds and nuts and stay away from (with moderation...I sure do love some ice cream every once in a while...even though I have eliminated cow's milk from my diet) processed foods , white grains, and refined sugars.
The minute I heard about the Healthy Housewives I knew I had to become a part of it. To me, that is what I am embody. And while my domestic skills are often lacking (I somehow missed the home and garden gene in my DNA), I am a wife and mother who knows she is important enough to take care of. I truly believe you cannot be a good wife and mother if you do not love yourself first. This includes ensuring a long healthy life so you can enjoy a long healthy life with the ones you love most.
